New Residential Development, Havant Hampshire

Application Type: Heritage, Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment in Support of Full Planning
Development Description: 17 New Residential Units within a Conservation Area
Local Authorities/Councils: Havant Borough Council, St Faith’s Conservation Area

Fuller Long are delighted to have worked alongside PDP Architecture LLP on a recent application for the construction of 17 new residential units within a conservation area in Havant.

The proposed 17 residential dwellings include 7 dwellinghouses and 10 apartments. The dwellinghouses will be new build whilst 3 apartments (1 being a duplex) are planned to be within existing structures. The other 7 apartments will be new build, with one being partly within a new mansard roof extension on top of one of the existing buildings.

Due to the site’s location within the St Faith’s Conservation Area, as well as its vicinity to several other statutorily listed buildings, necessitated a robust Heritage, Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment to inform the design and ultimately assess the impact of the development on the local historic environment. Other assets that had a potential to be affected by the scheme included the St Faith’s Church, which is grade II* listed, as well as several other grade II listed buildings such as the 16thC Old House at Home Public House.

The Visual Impact Assessment also takes into consideration the key views in the area and how the significance of the heritage assets within the view may be affected by the new residential development; in particular, views that include the above buildings. Our heritage team, led by Josie Roscoe, undertook an in depth assessment of the key views and came to the conclusion that the development scheme responded sensitively to the neighbouring heritage assets and would sit comfortably within its context. Subsequently, it was also concluded that the character and appearance of the St Faith’s Conservation Area would be preserved and the significance of the other heritage assets would also be sustained.

The application is currently awaiting a decision from Havant Borough Council.
